If you’re looking for a cost effective way to add value to your home while keeping it cooler in summer you need to consider retractable awnings.

You can add a number of different types of shading device to your home to keep you home cooler in summer, like patio covers or awnings. And if you’re considering awnings there are different types of awnings to choose from. What are the benefits of retractable awnings compared to fixed awnings.

It sounds silly but you need to remember that a fixed awning is fixed in one place so you can’t move it at all. This is the cause of a number of problems. Firstly it needs to be fixed in place and usually an arm or post of some kind is used. This can look a little ordinary. Worse, once your awning is fixed it cannot be taken down, at least not without a lot of trouble, so having fixed awnings is a real problem in bad weather, like storms. At best they will bang and thrash, at worst break or tear or even get torn down. In times like these fixed window covers are not a good idea.

If there’s a storm coming you could always of course take them all down but it’s time consuming and hard work, and who is really going to do that? It’s very common for fixed window covers to be damaged.

A fixed awning is out in the weather all the time. They get wet and dry out, wet again and dry out again, and so on. Most are made of some type of canvas or vinyl, which rots and deteriorates. And sun will make this worse.

And of course if you get new ones they will rot and fade as well.

So you are looking at a short lifespan for your fixed awnings, and the cost of replacing them adds up over time, not to mention the hassle of replacing them.

The arms of fixed awnings are usually made of steel which rusts and also needs replacing regularly.

But although fixed awnings have some disadvantages over retractable awnings they have one big advantage. They are cheaper initially than retractable awnings.

And a retractable awning. though more expensive initially, works out more cost competitive over time. And they have other advantages. If a storm is coming they just retract out of the way. Easy. And so if they are retracted they get less sun and rain damage.

And if it’s a cool day you can retract them too, and put them out on hot days. And if there’s few cool or stormy days coming and you’re worried about your awnings you can get motion and even rain sensors so that they can retract automatically.

And the kids won’t be running into fixed poles and there’s no arms to rust.

Retract your awnings on a cool day and keep the light in the house, put them out on a hot day to keep the heat out.

Retractable awnings are definitely more expensive to install initially, but over time the cost evens out compared to fixed awnings, and there’s so many other advantages to having awnings you can retract.
